Bali: a trip based on the awesome Hong Kong Airlines business class fares we booked in August 2018
It's been a while, I know, since my last update.
Last year we didn't take any international trips, so I didn't feel as inclined to get back into this blog. However recently we went to Hong Kong (via layover), Bali and Singapore (for 1 day). This trip was quite exhausting - 8 nights total including the HK layover, with 1 night in Singapore.
It all started with accidental business class fares on Hong Kong Airlines in August last year. I think we paid ~$630K USD per ticket for business class SFO > HK > DPS and back. Yes this is cheaper than some economy fares. After frantically texting my +1, we decided on dates in March for 1.5 weeks. I knew the deal wouldn't last so I was excited after the booking was confirmed. Booking 6 months in advance meant not doing much of anything for 3 months, and then the research began.
The flight was not short: 15 hours to HK, 18 hours of a layover, then another 5 hours of flight time before landing in DPS. It was our first time flying business on an international flight and while it definitely did NOT disappoint - I still couldn't sleep despite the lie flat seats. I just cannot sleep anywhere unless it's a bed. Here's some photos of the experience but mostly of the food:
The first photo is the appetizer during the 3 course main meal served right after departure. The cheese platter and the dim sum plate was from the "snack" menu.
The last photo is of my requested "Vegetarian Oriental" meal - the smaller last meal of the flight. I do not recommend choosing this option unless you are strictly vegetarian and cannot eat onions (wth?). First I found out that you were supposed to call to advise them of your dietary restrictions 24 hours ahead of your departure as I was checking in online. I called immediately and the airlines said that in the first leg, my dietary preference would not be acknowledged. This was not true as they had my special meal on the first leg.
I only opted for this b/c I did not realize that there actually is a vegetarian option in almost all of the flights we took. The entrees were very bland. In addition, you never got to select a dessert since it came with your appetizer. In the end I was fine with it b/c it was a very healthy option and it prevented me from being a fatty with dessert.
After 15 hours of flying, we landed in Hong Hong!
